Helping your dog get use to grooming
December 22, 2014
I often get new clients in , and their dog's are not use to grooming it might be a new puppy or an older dog that has not be groomed too often or never learned to behave .
So when these dog's come to me to be groomed they often think its play time, or they keep wanting to sit (which they can't do well being groomed) or they want to bite me!
Just like anything else your dog needs to be trained on how to act while being grooomed. So what
I tell my clients to do , is take your dog home have them stand on a table or washing machine , never
ever take your hand off them in case they decide to jump off. Take your steel comb and pin brush and while your brushing your dog make sure he contiunes to stand , if he trys to sit gentle push him back up to standing postion and remember to praise him while he is standing. If he wants to sit again
simple keep saying "up" and good boy /girl.
At the same time take his paw and comb it , this gets him use to having his paws touch and his leg liffed up, once again while standing. Do this to each paw lifting the leg at the same time gently.
If you practice this weekly he /she will soon be use to being groomed and learn that he/she must stand during the session.
If you need any extra help book a basic dog training session with me I will be more then happy to help out!
